-I think the authors should more explicitly state that the use of 2 m air temperatures may result in some bias in their dataset - for example, some weather states may be associated with more rain events in the snow dataset, and some with fewer. Put another way, why are these 2 m temperatures sufficient for this study?
-I'm also concerned about using CloudSat data over the entire country, when it may be snowing over only a small portion of the country depending upon the event. The authors state that when vertical profiles from the north and south are compared, no noticeable difference in the vertical structure could be found. I think this seems odd, environments where snowfall is occurring can be very different from where it is not. Perhaps the large number of cases mitigates this effect. |
